Three years ago, Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn announced their megawatt celebrity relationship in synchronized Facebook posts. Sunday, they unannounced it in the same fashion.
According to a post on Woods’ website entitled “A Personal Message From Tiger” he and Vonn have called it quits, saying that “he and Lindsey Vonn have mutually decided to stop dating.”
Vonn, an Olympic gold medalist and one of the top women skiers in the world, also posted the announcement on her Facebook page at the same time, saying, “After nearly three years together, Tiger and I have mutually decided to end our relationship. I will always cherish the memories that we’ve created together. Unfortunately, we both lead incredibly hectic lives that force us to spend a majority of our time apart. I will always admire and respect Tiger. He and his beautiful family will always hold a special place in my heart.”
Vonn began dating Woods about two years after his divorce with his ex-wife, Elin Nordegren, which ended with Woods paying a settlement estimated from $ 100 million to an astronomical $ 750 million.
Woods’ divorce was part of an infidelity scandal in which Nordegren found out he was having several affairs with other women. The scandal came to light after Tiger Woods crashed his SUV into a tree in his driveway on Thanksgiving night 2009 after Nordegren had confronted him about the other women he was seeing.
As recently as a month ago at The Masters, Vonn was photographed on the Augusta National course with Woods and his children, saying she felt lucky to be part of the lives of Woods’ two children, and called the golfer and his kids “amazing.”
She later praised the parenting skills of Woods at an event she attended in New York and said she was impressed with daughter Sam, 7, and son Charlie, 6.
“They’re great. They’re amazing kids, and he’s an amazing father,” Vonn told People Magazine. “You know, I feel privileged to be along for the ride, and I help as much as I can. They’re great kids. I love them.”
Woods and Vonn both announce on their personal website the end of their relationship.
Marriage rumors circled around Vonn and Woods in February at the World Skiing Championships in Beaver Creek, Colo.. The celebrity couple made it a point to attend each other’s tournaments and races throughout their relationship, including when Woods showed up unexpectedly at a World Cup event in January in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, with a missing front tooth.
Vonn, Woods and Woods’ agent, Mark Steinberg, claimed that a video photographer had knocked Woods’ front tooth out as his then-girlfriend appeared on the winners’ podium after the race, but race organizers told the Daily News the account was inaccurate.
Nicola Colli, the secretary general of the race’s organizing committee, told The News that there was not “blood everywhere” as Woods has alleged and that no such incident happened. “I was with him from the tent to the snowmobile that carried him away,” Colli said. “There was no blood. . . . If Tiger Woods said that, I don’t really know what to say.”
Woods makes headlines showing up to watch Vonn at the Alpine World Ski Championship with a missing tooth.
Woods and Vonn each cite their hectic lives of both being world-class athletes as reasoning behind the end of their relationship.
Woods and Vonn both post a message saying they have ‘deep admiration for one another.’
