Will Smith was shot to death Saturday night in New Orleans.

The NFL community was in mourning on Sunday after tragically losing former Saints defensive end Will Smith in an apparently senseless act of road rage on Saturday night, according to police.

“Heard the tragic news man R.I.P To an old teammate and great guy. Prayers to his family,” Jets running back Khiry Robinson, who was teammates with Smith in New Orleans, wrote on Twitter.

Smith was killed following a three-car accident in New Orleans, according to police. Authorities said that a man driving a Hummer, also involved in the accident, shot at Smith multiple times following the accident, killing the former Saint. His wife was also shot in the leg twice.

New Orleans police later charged Cardell Hayes, 28, with second-degree murder in connection with Smith’s death.

Robinson was just one of many current and former NFL players from across the league that took to social media to mourn the death of the former Saint.

“Tired of saying “RIP” to my NFL brothers…this can’t be life,” Jets safety Calvin Pryor tweeted.

“#ripwillsmith Prayers for Will and his family. Senseless to say the least!!!” Michael Strahan wrote.

Smith’s former coach, Sean Payton, also sent out words of mourning for his old player.

“Heavy Hearts w the senseless passing of our Team Capt. Will Smith,” Payton wrote. “Pray for his wife’s recovery and their children.”

Both local teams also sent out messages about Smith.

“Sending thoughts & prayers to the @Saints organization, and the friends and family of Will Smith. #FootballFamily,” the Giants wrote on Twitter

“Our thoughts & condolences are with the family & friends of Will Smith and the @Saints organization. #NFLFamily,” the Jets added.

The tragedy struck a chord with athletes from other sports, too.

“Prayers and condolence sent out to Will Smith #RIP and his beautiful family!” Lebron James wrote. “So sad man. Good dude he was man!”
