The Golden Gloves continue Thursday.
It may be the world’s most famous gym, so it was an appropriate venue for the world’s most famous amateur boxing tournament.
The 141-pound novice and open divisions stepped into the ring at Gleason’s Gym in Brooklyn for another night of Golden Gloves bouts on Thursday.
And in a rematch of last year’s 141-pound open finals, Richardson Hitchins of Atlas Cops N Kids defeated Michael Hughes of Church Street Boxing Club, 3-0, in The Colony Pest Bout of the Night.
“I fought a lot of tournaments,” said the 18-year old Hitchins. “I went to the Olympic trials and fought fighters that were on an elite level. I came in just mentally different from last year.”
Different mind set, same results.
Hughes came out fast and tried to test Hitchins’ body with a strong flurry of hooks. Hitchins moved well, though, picking his shots and staying off the ropes, where Hughes wanted him.
The first round ended with Hughes walking into a good right hook. In the second, Hughes continued to be the aggressor, but Hitchins landed the sharper shots.
In the third, Hitchins played the bully, forcing Hughes to the ropes. Hughes may have outworked Hitchins, but he also caught the most damage.
The P.C. Richards Boxer of the Night went to 141-pounder Dashawn Johns of John’s Gym, who beat Derrell Williams of Atlas Cops N Kids in a third-round TKO.
“I put in all the work I had to do,” said the 25-year old Johns, who showed his finesse and power against Williams and closed the show with The Empire Casino Punch of the Night, a sweet uppercut, followed by a couple of hooks William had no answer for.
“My very first TKO — that feels amazing,” Johns said.
The next Gloves event will take place Friday at Knights of Columbus Hall in Mineola.
